Rapid test for quantitative measurement of calprotectin
Calprotectin, a calcium-binding S100 protein released mainly by neutrophils, is a reliable, sensitive and specific marker for bowel inflammation, but is not elevated in functional disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). The sensitive Quantum Blue Calprotectin Rapid Test utilises a lateral flow cartridge and a user-friendly Reader System to distinguish between those patients who require a colonoscopy for further diagnosis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), and those patients who have IBS and for whom a colonoscopy is unnecessary.
The test is both simple and rapid. Once the test cartridge is inserted into the tray in the reader, stool extract followed by chase buffer is added to the sample loading port on the cartridge. The timer function on the reader is then started, the tray is closed, and the cartridge is scanned. The result, given as μg of calprotectin per g stool, can be read on the reader screen after 12 minutes.
